In 2003, with the intention to update the knowledge on the topic, in ISTAO an Observatory on Maritime Traffics was established, thanks to the support of the Port Authority of Ancona and Chambers of Commerce of Ancona.

The main activities of the Observatory are the preparation of an annual report on the maritime traffics of the Adriatic basin. This document has become essential to monitor the competitive system of the principal ports of the Adriatic. In the Observatory specific investigations have been conducted on the logistic and infrastructural system. This is the case of the Observatory for the Logistic Intermodal Platform and Infrastructure, promoted by the Port Authority of Ancona, Interporto Marche, Marche Region, Ancona Province and Municipality of Ancona.
