The Institute has always been located in Ancona, but it has moved to different seats in its short history.
When the ISTAO was established in 1967, it was located in a number of buildings of the Archbishopric of Ancona, in Piazza del Senato in the Old Town. The tutorial – and seminar – based teaching methods, as well as the small-scale nature of the student activities of the 10 students involved in the Master in Applied Economics, made these smaller buildings the ideal venue. The beauty of the old palace granted a certain status to the ISTAO project while it was being established.
Unfortunately, after two years, ISTAO needed to find a new home following a change in the Bishop’s Court.
A new location was found in Via Goito, in the empty apartment of the Secretary of Ancona Commune, and this remained the venue for another couple of years. This gave ISTAO time to find a new venue in Corso Garibaldi, above the premises of the Cassa di Risparmio (Savings Bank) of Ancona, currently Unicredit.
These premises were seriously damaged by earthquake in 1972. ISTAO literally fled the city centre, finding hospitality at Villa Beer where it remained until 1998.
The “pleasant roaming” of ISTAO ended when it moved to Villa Favorita.
The Villa Favorita complex was purchased in 1990 and it became the new venue in 1998 after significant renovation and restoration work.
It is a majestic, octagonal building located on the outskirts of Ancona, built between the late 18th and early 19th century by Count Luigi Ricotti, who came from a wealthy Ancona family of shipowners and merchants.
The functions of representation, study, and documentation at ISTAO were able to be suitably accommodated in a small campus, which at the same time gave ideal prominence to the old architectural complex.
The campus consists of the following buildings: Villa Favorita, Scuderie, Limonaia and Giardino d’inverno.
A Great Hall and a Congress Hall is available for meetings and conferences; there are lecture halls, spaces for individual and group work, computer labs, and a library.
A comfortable environment, in short, in which to study and enjoy moments of leisure and cultural learning.
Since 2014, ISTAO has also a branch located at Villa Tofani, in the city of Ascoli Piceno
